Life on the Road

I’ve have now for a few years basically lived in a van, it just always ends up being the easiest solution. I always have my stuff with me, always have my own bed to sleep in, have food and snack readily available. Somehow it just works for me, but don’t go into this lifestyle because of dreams or hopes that everyday will be an adventure. Believe me when I say, that living this way has huge consequences.

Space

First of all the space, you don’t have it! Everything needs to be weight and measured, you need to ask these questions:

  • how often do you use it?

  • are there any alternatives, that would have multiple functions?

  • could you get by, just by borrowing as you go along.

My van came with a fully working toilet, but many get by with a bucket and a plastic bag for emergency, for everyday they use toilets at supermarkets, coffeeshops or the like. Having a shower and toilet takes up so much space, but for me it’s without question a necessity. There are a lot of cool ideas and builds which space optimizes. but still keep core functionality. But you also need to adopt the ideas into your place of living. Having an outside shower is great if you are living somewhere warm, me living in Denmark could only use such a shower for 2-3 months. From another practical point you have to clean the van. Having a small vacuum is great and newer lithium ones are quite powerful, they still take up space and needs to be charged. A bucket and a mop gets you a long way as well, but would require you having a bigger water supply in the van.
